The Budgerigar Society will be celebrating its 85th Anniversary by holding the 9th Convention, at the same venue as the last one, the Royal Clifton Hotel in the seaside resort of Southport from 11th – 13th June. As with previous Conventions there is a packed programme for fanciers to enjoy.

The Budgerigar Society President, Dave Herring, will open the Convention at 2.00 pm on Friday, to be followed by two lectures in the afternoon; Jeff Attwood & Mick Freakley “Down Memory Lane”, and Brian Sweeting “The Life of Brian – Make ‘em Breed”. The evening promises to be a fun night with an Inter Society / Group Quiz.

World champions Richard & Michael Miller will kick off the Saturday sessions with “From Junior Exhibitor to Champion Partnership”, to be followed by the vet Kevin Eatwell on “Infectious Diseases”. The afternoon session will be presented by the International Partnership of Ron Pearce & Marcel Buhler on “The Development of the Modern Show Budgerigar”. After that fanciers can watch the judging for Best in Show and view the birds. The evening will be the highlight of the Convention with the Convention Gala Dinner. After Dinner Speaker, Eric Peake will no doubt entertain everyone with his usual wit and humour.

On Sunday morning officials of the Specialist Societies Ghalib Al-Nasser, Lyn Bancroft and Ian Fielding will be talking about “The Specialist Varieties” to be followed by the successful partnership of Chris Huxley & Alan Marchant “Pairing for Success”. The Closing Ceremony and presentations will be in the afternoon.

As always, the Convention will include a show for owner bred birds only with Challenge Certificates for the 19 colours pre-graded 7 points each. Judges engaged are all past Presidents of the society over the past 5 years; Janice Al-Nasser, Geoff Capes, Dave Cottrell and Bob Francis. Entries for the show should be sent to the Show Secretary, Pat Fielding, 16 Pilkington Road, Southport, PR8 6PD All entries to the show and lectures are free of charge!

The Budgerigar Society’s Convention is an event not to be missed and a great opportunity to catch up with fellow fanciers, both nationally and internationally; so if you are free that weekend then come along and celebrate with other members The Budgerigar Society’s 85th Anniversary. I look forward to seeing you there!

The L&SCBS is one of the ten regional Area Societies affiliated to the Budgerigar Society in the UK.

It’s THE society, for budgerigar breeders and exhibitors, that caters for the needs of those who live in London, Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Middlesex, Essex and Hampshire.

There are also a number of members from outside our region and overseas – as they believe the society is one of the best in the UK.

Events

The society holds various shows and events throughout the year.

The events and dates for 2010 are as follows.

Young Bird show and Seminar – 27th June – Smallfield

Open show – 25th July – Smallfield

Specialist & Rare Variety show – 10th October – Smallfield

New Fancier & Beginner’s Day – 24th October – Smallfield

Sales & Promotional Day – 14th November – The Market Hall, Maidstone, Kent

Our events at Smallfield are held at Centenary Hall, Smallfield, Surrey, which is about three miles from Gatwick airport.

Patronage

We give Patronage in the form of rosettes and various awards to shows in our area as well as a few selected shows outside the area. These awards are for competition amongst our members at these shows. For those who take showing seriously, winning a L&SCBS rosettes is highly prestigious.

News & Information

We believe in keeping in contact with our members and we do this by sending out regular newsletters. These are usually two sides of A4 so they are concise, informative and always up to date with society news and information. These also carry news from our local specialist societies.

The society knows how difficult it is to get help and advice when you need it, so it has set up a HelpLine where a group of experienced fanciers can be contacted by telephone. These fanciers are available for basic non-veterinary advice when it’s needed. Our new members and those new to the hobby find this service extremely valuable.

Exhibition Budgerigars

When showing budgerigars it’s vital to have them with your own rings, which need to carry your own personal ring number. Members can order such rings to enable them to show their birds at any exhibition.

Society Administration

The society is managed by a group of members known as the General Council. This consists of a President, Secretary, Subscription Secretary, Treasurer, Patronage Secretary, Chairman and a committee of up to ten people. These members come from the whole area and meet about eight times a year to manage the society’s affairs.

Join Us !

The L&SCBS is a society with the primary objective of encouraging and supporting people to keep, breed and show budgerigars. If you live in the area covered by the society – you NEED to be a member.

Were you one of those who were fortunate enough to attend the 2006 Budgerigar Society (BS) Convention? If so, you are also probably one who has been talking about the event ever since.

Were you one of those who were fortunate enough to attend the 2006 Budgerigar Society (BS) Convention? If so, you are also probably one who has been talking about the event ever since, because the 2006 fixture had everything going to make it a great success: a wonderful venue, excellent speakers, thought-provoking discussions, the opportunity to mix socially with fellow fanciers to renew old friendships, make new ones and all-in-all share wonderful camaraderie. A truly great weekend and, to cap it all, shared in superb summer weather.

Whether you were there or not, we are offering the same format and can guarantee that almost all these elements will again be present, at the same superb hotel, in 2010! (We are keeping our fingers crossed that the “full hand” will be completed by the return of an equally enthusiastic sun!).

We have already, of course, given advance notice of this event and its provisional programmed. Sadly, one disappointment, in that sadly Reinhard Molkentin is not well enough to attend and we send our good wishes for his future health.

So what do we still have on offer? All the ingredients recalled from 2006, although offered by different folk – except that Kevin Eatwell returns by popular demand to tell us more that we should know about budgerigar health and welfare – a prime subject. In addition, we have what should be a very entertaining evening with our own “Quiz Inquisitor”, Grant Findlay, hosting an Inter-Society/Group Quiz. Have you organised a team for this?

Whether you decide to take the full package on offer, at what is a very modest tariff for such excellent service and fare, or make alternative arrangements (there are many alternatives on offer at Southport) we hope that you will “Come & Join Us”.

The full programme and further information is available on the BS website:
