Tail Feather Loss
If you have experienced tail loss and have some reaction, do please add a comment at the end of the article(s). Naturally it is a problem that should be able to be cracked – somebody may even have found a cure to clean up the feather follicle to allow new growth to re-appear. If so, please do contribute.
Tails You Lose! – Part 2
Avian Polyomavirus (APV) infection, otherwise known as Budgerigar Fledging Disease, is the primary cause of tail feather loss although other factors are often involved. Budgerigar breeders recognise symptoms of APV in their birds as French Moult. Prevention is the only cure as there is no treatment for APV.
Tails You Lose! – Part 1
You can breed a super bird with all the right head qualities, depth of mask and so on, until it gets to 5-7 weeks of age and suddenly it loses its tail feathers! It can be earlier or later. The bird is what I have always thought – a borderline French Moult victim. The reasoning is that the tails are the longest feathers in the budgerigar body, and thus require a perfectly nutritious metabolism to sustain these feathers soundly to full growth and permanence, until the first normal moult.

The London & Southern Counties Budgerigar Society
The L&SCBS is one of the ten regional Area Societies affiliated to the Budgerigar Society in the UK. It’s THE society, for budgerigar breeders and exhibitors, that caters for the needs of those who live in London, Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Middlesex, Essex and Hampshire.
Major Request from Gerald Binks
I will be approaching many experienced breeders to write and submit articles for the site – along with their photographs of birds, their aviaries and themselves. That, however, does not prevent those less experienced from also contributing. There is great pleasure in seeing your work published and the benefits are profound.

No Flash Photography
It has been reported to Budgerigar.co.uk, that the Budgerigar Society has banned all flash photography at all Budgerigar Society Patronage Shows with immediate effect.

Show Winners
I recently received photographs of a few 2010 show winners. Unfortunately, though I can see these are quality unmoulted 2010 young birds, they are crouching and not displaying their true quality for assessment.
UK Budgerigar Quality
I have recently had several visitors from Europe, who apparently took the earlier view that the UK budgerigars had slipped behind the European qualities. They had also visited other leading breeders and had now reversed their former opinions completely, including their opinions while at my aviary.
Facebook and Amazon
I receive many requests to join social networking websites, such as Facebook. Secondly, it has been brought to my attention that Amazon continues to sell first editions of “The Challenge” on a steady basis.
Rochdale (UK) Hosts the 2010 Five Ways Show
On Sunday, 6th June, 2010, Rochdale Budgerigar Society is Hosting the 2010 Five Ways Show at the Rochdale Transport Club, Baron St, Rochdale, OL16 1SJ. The judges for this event are Mr & Mrs Terry Jukes. Judging commences at 10.30 hours. The Five Ways Exhibition takes place annually to further the hobby and encourage even more friendly fellowship in the North West of England.

The Sheppard & Flanagan partnership was formed in 1990 – by necessity in a way, as individually they could not afford to import a shipment of birds from the UK separately. So, as a partnership, they participated in the very first shipment (nine birds) and the majority of their stock was purchased from Tom Williams and Peter Sanderson.
The Dicavalli Stud – Henry George
Henry George lives with his wife, Diane in a stunning area just north of Brisbane in Queensland. He is arguably one of Australia’s pre-eminent budgerigar breeders and his results at national level are second to none. For the record, Henry was the driving force to get 4500 birds into Australia from the UK so many years ago and the leader of the first syndicate.

Budgerigar Health Part 5 of 5 – Problem Solving
A systematic physical examination of the sick or dead budgerigar helps reveal more subtle symptoms and improves the accuracy of self-diagnosis, but when in doubt contact your avian veterinarian. Individuals that display distant signs of failing health or disease should be caught and examined more closely in order to identify the exact nature of the health problem.
Budgerigar Health Part 4 of 5 – Medicines
Budgerigars are particularly susceptible to environmental diseases that may cause catastrophic losses and illnesses that affect their wellness and ability to breed. Medicines are needed to cure and prevent these diseases such as coccidiosis, worms, lice and mites.
